a chain with spike thing and a meteorite or slag thing?

Hi yeah I fount me some junk. besides the usual 100's of pop tabs and cans and pennies I located a few strange things. The chain thing was/is rusted shut I found it about 600 feet west of the missississiisissiip and the melty rock thingy that a magnet sticks to but is not itself magnetic, was found in a dried up tiny tiny lake beds edge about 20 feet from shore. any help would be great thanks, db

Take the dremel to it...Looks like it has some type of lock on the end...could also be part of leg irons......

Looks almost like an anchor. The metal looks like it was melted in a fire, and 20 feet from the shoreline is perfect for a campfire. That's my best. Good luck! Thanks for sharing. -Noodle

yeah I thought the melty thing could be slag or something but its not really metal? and it was actually 20 feet into the water from the shoreline (that dried up a bit). also the chain thing kinda looks like the spike could fit through another chains link then turned so as to connect the two chains... just a thought since I have never seen anything like this on the end of a chain. oh well maybe a few more people will see it and know what it is. thanks for the comments, im off to dig a bit before dark. db

DB, First, Welcome to the Forum. I Think What You Have There is a Chain to a CW Artillery Sponge Bucket. I Have One That I Dug Here In Charleston. It Suspended The Bucket Under The Cannon When The Artillery Piece Was Being Moved. Hope This Is Helpful. trk5capt...

holy carp... never thought that it could be that old but it sure does look a lot like your picture only much shorter and less clean, hehe. Man thanks a mill for the post and info and pics. I found some huge cannon-ish looking thing sticking out of the ground near the chain but I figured it was a sewer pipe or something and didnt even look at it twice. Im going back tomorrow to see if its a sewer pipe or something better. Im hunting about 2 miles south of fort bellefontaine. I really like all the cannon ball pics you have, how deep underground were they? also whats the thing in the picture that has a perfect round dent in it (a piece of an exploded cannon maybe), and is that grape shot or something in between the cannon balls? again thanks for the info, db

I really don't want to let the air out of anybody's tires, but the chain-thing (I don't know its "proper" name) is not strictly a military item ...or even mostly military.

You're right, you turn the "spike" sideways, slip it through a hole, turn the spike crossways, and it "locks" the chain in place (as long as weight or tension is on it). They've been around since forever ...and they're still being made. One of 'em is holding my pickup-truck's spare tire securely in place (horizontally) beneath the truck's bed.

And no, that's not something I rigged up myself. It came that way from the manufacturer. Honest. : )
