    Thingie with string thru it.

Found this at an early site, early to mid 1800's. Did not test positive for silver. Still would like any suggestions on what it may be. I have a dime in the one photo for comparison.

This is crazy. I just found one with the string today myself. No clue what it is.
I will clean mine up and take a pic.

Looks like nylon rope/string so it cant't be real old...1940's probably at the earliest.

How long is the string hanging from it, kinda resembles the top end of a crotal bell but I know those are typically brass

Does this ring a bell for anyone ?
I kind of remember seeing these, like on an El Camino bed cover, or boat tarps.
I think ? I remember them getting dents in the side, but not sure.

I don't remember ones with holes, but I'm not remembering specifics, and just postulating. IDK ?

Do camping trailers use these things for tarps ?

Am I seeing things or are there some marks on the lip? Maybe letters?

    I would say it's about a 5" round loop on the string/twine.

It looks to be markings or letters but they are very hard to make out even under a digital microscope. After looking at this on a larger screen, can it possibly spell "Dipped"?

On the rim of the opening, I can read "....PPER".
First part of word is not visible because of damage.

It could be farm related but mine was found at an old neighborhood teardown that dates to turn of 20th century.

Maybe a crimp seal for something. The ends of a wire are crimped inside the metal. You pull the string to pop off the seal. I don't get the impression that it's very old...

Iíve found a number of these before. I think some people thought they were an attachment at the end of sausage links, others thought electrical power line components. Now seeing the strings, Iím thinking sausage.
