    S.C. State Seal Button

    I know it's a S.C. State seal coat button and from the 1830's -40's but just not sure which issue. Was told it was a (sc3).
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Info on the internet says "IVES SCOTT & CO" back mark is 1830's. That makes this a Confederate "pre-war build up" button. Very nice find!

    It is very close to an SC3 but not exact (assuming the pic below is identified correctly...).

    I looked for a while but didn't see an exact match. Although I must admit that after about 20 minutes they all start to look the same...

    You may have to get the book and a looking glass and spend a couple of hours.

    The best book for time-dating a button by its backmark ("American Military Button Makes And Dealers; Their Backmarks & Dates"), says the button-making company which manufactured your button was in business using the name "Ives, Scott & Co. / Waterbury" only from 1834 to 1836.

    As others have told you, your find is listed in the Alphaeus Albert button-book as button #SC-3. It is a rare variation, made with a completely-flat face even though it is a 2-piece button. It was made during the very brief period between the end of brass 1-piece flatbuttons era and the start of "domed" 2-piece buttons.
