    like the way your brain works, but I wouldn't slam that around in a stove pipe and risk tearing it apart...........and older brick chimneys it seems like it would not work well in the corners

    Maybe a cap for something, or a mold (and those ridges at the bottom are so you can get a crowbar in there, or something, to shake it loose from the mold.)
    A total guess, BTW.

    But I don't think it's a bell either.

    The thickness of the metal and those teeth at the one end are curious. How far up does the opening go? Anything inside of it? Ask the fellow relic hunter to provide as much detail as possible (i.e. where found, what had been there in the past, what was found nearby). Context may help ID.
