this is stuff I used to practise with my DFX and play with it as I learned. I got this tip and learned it from a gentleman that is no longer with us. It also works on other detectors too

You will need a small silver coin (preferably a small hammered penny), a piece of cloth, several books of differing thickness - use ones with a binding and not those with staples holding them together, or you will pick up the staples.

Find a small area in the house, patio or garden where you will be able to ground balance your detector if needed, and enough room to allow a metre swing of the loop. If your detector has an All Metal Mode or Pinpointing facility, use it to check the spot for metal, if not, turn your Discrim to zero and check the area for metal.

Whatever detector you are using, set your detector up as you would for a normal days detecting, i.e. Sensitivity, Discrim, Threshold Tone, etc. at your average settings, or the settings you use the most.

If you are outdoors, put the cloth on the ground, this will keep your books clean. Place the coin on top of the cloth and cover it with some books (10 cm, or 4 inches). Go over the books with your loop at normal sweep speed and make sure that you are getting a signal from the coin. Add another book and sweep again, checking that you are still getting a signal. Keep adding books, use thinner ones as the signal gets weaker, until you just get a weak signal from the coin.

Program 2

a good friend on here shared this with me and it is what I used on my DFX mostly. It has gotten me much deeper. The program is for a XLT but works great on my DFX, I adjust the preamp depending on conditions.

power on
go into preset programs
preset
coin and jewerly and load it
now hit menu

basic adjustments
scroll down to viewing angle
hit enter and change it to 30

hit menu again and scroll down
and go into audio ratchet pin point: off
scroll to tone id: tone on
scroll to vco: vco on
scroll to autotrac offset
hit enter and bump it to 1
hit menu and scroll to block edit
hit enter and scroll to +95
pull the trigger
let it go
hit menu
main menu
hit pro options
go down to disc
hit disc and scrool down to block edit
hit enter
scroll up to +95
check accepted
scroll down to -35

hit menu
scroll down to bottle cap reject
hit enter
change to 1
hit menu
go to icons
turn off
*enter turns them off*
scroll down to preamp
hit enter and turn up to 4
pull the trigger
hit menu
go into preset programs
scroll down to one of the custom programs where want to save this program to

setting my program
program # you wish
hit enter
scroll to save
load , save , name
hit enter
now load it
hit enter
Ground balance and your ready to go

next time just load custom #

if it is to noisy and falsing go to pro options and turn the pre amp down
always run the preamp as high as you can with out the machine giving you false signals
when you are sweeping the coil

give it a few hours to get used to you will love it listen for the high tones
penny run into the 70s dimes 80 to 81 quarters 87 halves 90 dollars 92 93
Indians run 55 to 70 but mostly around 65
nickels run 16 to 21
this will get deep coins
a little noisy but you will get used to it
no for the performance its worth it
will take a little getting use too though
about the only thing you will have to change is the preamp
always run it as high as you can

it saves its self in the program
you will work with that every time you go out
the pre amp is different
always remember when you change the preamp re ground balance

Relic hunting what should I hunt in
this program
Dig all non iron signals when relic hunting
when relic hunting you dig ten times what you do coin hunting
run the pre amp as high as you can so it goes deep

Correlate gives me a more stable operation thus I can turn up some things pretty well.
Also gives me an advantage when in and among iron....It gives me quite good depth on coins I did experiment with a freshly buried coin, still got in a good signal at about 7"...

Yeah but use Tone ID so you can hear all targets and easier ignore the iron while still getting the other stuff.
I wrote that it was user preference but recommend it VERY much.

I also can turn up Preamp to 3 and AC sens to 75 and it still is stable.

There will be quite some noise and some might not like that.

Depends on where and what your hunting.

Best data chooses the "most" reliable frequency.
in Correlate both frequencies must give the same or similar results, thus iron often "smears" this is then not accepted and so is EMI etc as disturbance is often random a good target is not.
I prefer Correlate now after I have been experimenting for a while with the program I posted.
It allows me to push up AC sens and preamp even more.
I have made some changes not many though:

Target Volume 48 [User preference]
Audio Threshold 17 [User preference]
Tone (Audio Freq) 215 [User preference]

When you can push up your sens and preamp your getting deeper

Yeah. Note that AC is for motion discriminate mode while DC is for pinpoint mode (none motion mode)
You'll need to crank both up (AC & DC sens) when motion mode (AC sens) gets deeper...

I've had the DFX now for a while and have done my homework. ;D

Thanks for sharing your programs. It's a great help to all those just getting started (and I'm going to save 'em too).

Correlate can help find good targets when you've got a lot of iron, but it doesn't go as deep as Best Data, which doesn't go as deep as 15KHz*, which itself doesn't go as deep as it does when used with Mixed Mode.

* depending on whether you're after coins or jewelry

Bama Dave's hint to me about iron was to ground balance the initial time; do it again (trigger+Enter) after a few sweeps, making sure you're over a spot devoid of targets; and then turn off AutoTrac--so AT doesn't adjust your GB as you go based on all the square nails & other iron. Then periodically do another clean GB to keep things "real".

I'll see if I already posted the Mixed Mode program. It has taken me to another level in going after deeper targets on the sites I was hunting last season. Graph Averaging and Accumulate are OFF in the MM program to aid in catching 'real-time' high-VDI Signagraph action.

Most of these programs are well thought out & should work just great. Thanks go out to those who posted them!

As a personal preference I open up the discrimination to -80. It helps get the wrap-around effect in play.

When I use Correlate I find I can boost the AC Sens to 80-85 while still having a stable detector. This will get the detector deeper to help make up for any loss of depth you might get going from Best Data. Great for trashy areas & areas with a lot of iron junk. I'd rather do that than increase the Bottlecap Reject too much.

Gotta agree on Tone ID. I've been using it since my Eagle Spectrum days & then with the XLT & now the DFX. I feel I'd be lost without it.

When using the 6X10 DD elliptical coil I find that I can also boost the AC gain up higher than when using the 9.5" round. If the DD coil doesn't go as deep as the stock 9.5 I'll bet it does with increased AC Sens. & it handles mineralized ground better.

When detecting in heavy trash I set my DC Sens to 15. It pinpoints down to a good 7" & isn't affected by nearby metal trash as much. Pinpointing is very accurate at this Sens.

Mind you all of these settings are for my area where & how I detect. I've had my DFX for 6 years & take a bit of time for experimentation each time I go out. I'm still learning!

My $.02 worth.

Thanks Sarge and Admiral de Salee

I appreciate you all too posting stuff on the DFX, I hope we can help those with the DFX that are starting out and :icon_scratch: their head some. I have had mine for 3-4 years now and as Sarge said I still learn every time I have it. I even play with it in my yard or a controlled enviroment moving this one digit etc trying to get the most out of it. Folks have shared so much with me helping me I hope we can return the favor so to speak.

I have to try with the 15Khz mode to then.
I also find that I can crank up Ac and Preamp to make up for the loss of depth I would get while using correlate.
I did strike a "honey hole" with this program yesterday, a bit over 30 Swedish kronor the smallest coin was 15mm in diameter most coins where a bit over 5" deep.(approximately)

Sarge: I have got a carpet of iron at one beach and to minimize masking I run wide open disc. Works great.

World Coin Catalog and my Mixed Mode Program

EU, if you don't have the World Coins Catalog or another source of coin valuations, I don't mind looking them up. I have the 1801-1900 and 1901-2000 books.
Someone here or on dfxonly had a Scandinavian coin, 1830 maybe?, that I was going to check on. I can't remember who it was, and I haven't run across the post again.

I have some sources on coins, no problem I have more then 3...
I don't know what post that was either??

I did try 15Khz yesterday and only missed one coin with correlate. A German 10 Pfennig 1991.

And one small coin on edge at around 3-4". He borrowed my DFX.

For even more depth use Mixed mode. (If you can stand it)
