I’ve had a site deep in the county park woods on my scout list for a couple years now. It is what I would categorize as a C or D site. A couple of the mid 1800’s maps have a homestead listed, but it shows in the 1900’s maps as coal strip mined. The site is a 1.5 mile trail hike, then .5 mile off the trail to get to it. Basically a pretty big gamble for a site that may have been buried 50’ down by the mining companies 100 years ago.

I finally decided to take the risk and I had a 4-5 hour window of time open last weekend. First signal was a very nice spun back tombac button. I knew the gamble had paid off. Here are the results of 5 hours digging. I will be back!

Not only did your gamble pay off with some nice finds, it looks like very little vegetation, making for easy swinging.
Thx Steve! You know it, the chances of the site being overgrown was pretty good. Thx

Some great buttons. I’m intrigued by the headless figure (clown?). Hopefully someone will ID it. 👍🏼
Thx, it’s a drawer pull escutcheon, but it does look like a headless clown, lol

That’s the first large cent I’ve seen cut in half. Normal for Spanish coins but seems unusual for a US cent.
It’s only my second cut Largie, I think this one is a Classic Head, so pretty early.

Fantastic coins, great relics! You found a great spot to detect. I would go back again with all those finds. Thanks for sharing.
