OK so 2 days ago I found a Confederate staff button not in the best of shape, my 11yo smashed a staff button on the same day .Today at a different site I dug up a button that was caked in dirt so I took my toothbrush to it and gave it a light brush and of course it crumbles in my hand so at that point I just keep brushing figured I can't do anymore damage, well the shank comes off. So I'm thinking its just a general service button I'll live. Nope I see a block I staring at me. After I get home I realized there was an old crack and it was just barely holding on before I dug it up and its the iron back version so I geuss that's why the shank came off so easy. Confederate stuff is hard to come by and to have 2 come apart by our hands is pretty sickening. IMG_20150409_174611_004.jpg IMG_20150409_184541_326.jpg thanks for looking

By the way, I'd gladly trade you that pretty, gold NY cuff in the other thread, for your old broken up Block I!! (But you'd be nuts)

Any block I is a good save - a few more years in the ground would have finished it off. Congrats!

:sadsmiley: I'm afraid we're all likely to see this happen more frequently. Between fertilizers and increasingly acidic rainfall all the relatively thin metal artifacts and relics are deteriorating more quickly than they used to. Much easier to damage or destroy them when they've been weakened by that. So find them while you can!

It may not be worth the "Big bucks" right now.
But digging it yourself, & knowing exactly where it was dug, IMO Is 'priceless'.
Great Find.
