it was 100 "new pesos" during the high inflation time of 1990-- when the old peso was 2.945 vs the dollar --mexico made the "new peso" at rate of 10 old peso's = 1 new peso -- at a rate of 3000 old peso's for a dollar -- it would take 300 new peso's to be a dollar ---so the $100 "new peso" coin at that time would be about 34 cents US in value

When I pulled out my 30 year old detector last year to see if I could find anything with it, a coin just like yours was the first thing I found. Boy, did it give a sweet sounding signal!

The "$" symbol is used in many nations as a symbol for their currency. Some of these nations call their currency "dollar", as do we. Many others using the same symbol use a different name such as "peso".

Shane,
Here's another story for your coin:
If you’re wondering where the dollar sign ($) came from, you’re in good company. No one really knows for sure, and several theories have emerged over the years. The most widely accepted explanation, according to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, goes back to the Spanish peso, which was accepted as the basic unit of value in colonial America during the late 1700s. Handwritten manuscripts dating to that time show that the peso—formally “peso de ocho reales” or “piece of eight” in America—was abbreviated PS. It’s believed that as time went on, the abbreviation was often written so that the S was on top of the P, producing an approximation of the $ symbol. I found an 1000 peso coin a couple summers ago, thought about making a money clip out of it. It's worth about 7 cents today, or we could send them to Greece, maybe they could use them.

the "pluS Ultra ' on the rear of a piece of 8 real "dollar" S over top a U --is also rumored to be the start of the "dollar sign"..also a U over a S -- as in United States "dollar' shortened to two straightened lines ll over a S over time
