Hi everybuddy

Today i met a guy with a md. Never seen one in the area where i often go. He was using a big coil but even that, he was finding a lot of coins. The area is a trashy one. I was using the 5x8 coil and still having troubles with the pull tabs.
I sugested him to come with me to a place where we could find old coins but he was very busy on collecting the euros.
I was walking on the zombie style when i found this coin.

I have found another one like this in a worse condition but i know it is silver. or at least i think so.
The question is: do i have to clean it & how?

This is the one that i found before.

Than i found this one, i don't know yet what it is.
img065.jpg img066.jpg

and also some pld stuff

img063.jpg

This one is a One Cent from Austrian reign in Italy, 1822.

the rings look old. one looks like copper and the other like nickel!
in the woods there's not much stuff but it is so relaxing in comparison with the parks.

Good luck

Vince,

I'm thinking the first coin is probably Spanish...the crest is the giveaway.

Great digs Vince. :occasion14: I'd rather dig old coins, like you than chase the euros. Thanks for posting, it's been 3 weeks since I swing the coil. I'll be detecting this weekend. :hello2:

Great coins Vince. I can't believe you invited him to your old honey hole. You are one swell guy. Be careful, you may have a new best friend who will clean out your site and then follow you around just to do the same. Nice guys will often be taken advantage of. Been there done that.

The one with the crown on the reverse and guys face on the obverse seems to be third from the bottom here: http://www.rhinocoins.com/ITALY/RSARDEGNA/CEMIIIA.HTML
I know so little about coins that I can't even figure out what they're calling it

Yes man. You are right. So it is not silver. It is billon. I found this:
Billon /ˈbα΅»lΙ™n/ is an alloy of a precious metal (most commonly silver, but also mercury) with a majority base metal content (such as copper). It is used chiefly for making coins, medals, and token coins. The word comes from the French bille, which means "log".

You worked it out, I could tell it was debased silver which is very difficult to clean. I have no good tips, other than DO NOT use lemon juice.

Not so good on debased silver, but if you don't care much about it, you could experiment.

Museum's would probably use 'PRE-LIM surface cleaner' from renaissance products, London. It is expensive & would only clean off the dirt & only improve it to a minor level.
