BTW... 1709 was the first year for Felix Melgarejo...
he was there for 20 years... in Lima that is.

Which makes this coin... "more" collectable... for many reasons...

The first years of a "tenure" ... the dies are "crisp"...
As time/years go on... the dies get worn... and coin quality goes down.
You have a first year coin...
IF real.
Super cool,

Little "light"... heh...
Like Don stated earlier... should be around the 6.7 mark...
But this could have been a clip.

I just checked something...
This is beginning to look ... um.... errrr heh...

I just referenced this... The State of Florida owns 12 of these... and only about 15 are in "private hands".

All of the 1709 Limas come from Colored Beach...
first worked by Real 8 in 1963-64...
and then by Moe Molinar in 1988...
Colored Beach is the wrecksite of the patache Nieves.

I heard about clipping, not exactly sure what that means and also if it was in the ocean for 300 years I imagine it wearing away a little too

Apparently, my friend just told me his grandfather is sending him the certificate of authenticity

A Third Party Grading Service such as PCGS or NGC, needs to certify the coin as authentic but if a counterfeit (fake), it will be returned in a body bag. You might want to check out the link below for information you might want to know but there were apparently other happenings as well. Just so you know, I also knew Mel Fisher, not really well but I had several long talks and discussions with him and his' wife Dolores about the Margarita and the Atocha. Dolores was always very nice and seemed more interested in my research and theories on the Atocha than Mel was!
