Sniffy drove down & snatched me up and headed down to Rebel's neck of the woods.focused mainly on 3 sites.the 1st one gave up the CW Artillery button(young & smith co new york backmark) and was real trashy.snapped a picture of a tonka truck tree along the way never seen anything like this before in my life :laughing7:
next site gave up quite a few buttons , a 1723 woods hibernia copper & a silver 47 rosie.
3 rd site with all the myrtle was pretty trashy and with a lot of brass targets & modern trash there.
question...the button with missing face came out of the hibernia site.was wondering what kind of front this had? lead filled front or pewter? :icon_scratch:

Good morning Dave, :coffee2: Your button in question from what I have learned finding that type would be from very early sites. There's a few kinds like them. Some are hollow cooper & some are solid lead filled. The lead filled ones are more like the one you posted with the drilled eye shank. They only show on my oldest sites,I think they very easy date to the at least late 17th century.I've found them among other items that would date to that. Also if you try to look them up only thing that comes close would be ones on the UK site in the Later Medieval (11th-15thC) part.I think you may be in a site that has quite a few periods of time being used from the coin, saddle pommel,& button may just be stuff deeper there. At any rate your doing very well man with plenty of nice relics on a regular basis. :headbang:
Take Care,
Pete, :hello:

LOVE Georges beak :laughing9:
dish button is rather odd, maybe just molded like that :icon_scratch:
I found two that are somewhat similar in shape...
Congrats on the great Colonial to CW Finds
I coulda swore i seen a post sometime here about these colonial buttons being lead or pewter filled on the face. the one on the left you can clearly see the remains of lead or pewter.they were definitely filled at some point.i guess they popped out in time.
please somebody chime in about these types of buttons
Now I see clearly, That's a new type to me... certainly early :icon_scratch:

Your Artillery button pre dates the C.W.............Young & Smith supplied many of the buttons for the Mexican War too!!I have dug the one piece variant

Young, Smith & Company operated in New York from approximately 1830 to around 1858. Backmarks from the partnership generally bear both names but in either order. W H Smith also sold buttons bearing his name solely.

A nice group of finds there  I would love to find one of those Woods Hibernia coppers!

I have found a number of those concave button backs over the years, but the fronts seem more difficult to find for some reason. I have found one front and it fits perfectly to one of my backs. I have found them on sites that date from the 1750's to the 1770's here in Pennsylvania.

Agreed, these cast composite two-piece copper-alloy buttons with integral drill shanks have a large timeframe from the 17th C-18th C :icon_thumright:
I find roughly the same amount of tops as bottoms but in ploughed land I rarely get them complete :(

Anyway, you have an early site - the saddle pommel is a find I have never had :icon_thumright:

I'm back with a question :help:
The oval 'buckle' like item to the left of the teapot in your hand group photo,
Do you know if there is a specific name for this?
I dug one with soldered attachment points, missing bar & chape/tongue,
but otherwise looks identical.
any info is appreciated
