1787 Machin's Mills Copper Halfpenny and more

Got back to the site where I found the Washington Inaugural button and to a new property behind it. Found a really nice 1787 Machin's Mills Copper Halfpenny along with a Warren G Harding Campaign badge (1920) and an original old fashioned coin shooting. a 1893 Indian Head penny which has been shot. Also found a great old ladies metal handbag (empty) that I haven't cleaned up yet. I plan on spending the day over there again tomorrow. The weather is scheduled to be beautiful and in the upper 60's....Lance

You the Man! :D
You're doing an awsome job on that site, not finding much from the 20th century? Those are some great old coinage! Got to love it!

Lance, it is absolutely incredible the finds you've gotten from this site. Congratulations on another great find!

What kind of activity was there in the past?

Nice finds Lance. Looks like the type of stuff that would have come from a fort or blockhouse nearby. I have seen guys at clubs bring in suitcase full of old coins and buttons of that time. Just reminds me of the stuff they found at old fort sites.

Great finds!! The penny looks like a victim of a musketball ;D Any ideas on how old the purse is or is there any makers marks on it?

I can't find any makers marks on it. I believe it to be the 1920's. I have cleaned it up some and it appears to be a thick silver plate. I will post another picture of it when it drys...Thanks..Lance

Re: 1787 Machin's Mills Copper Halfpenny and more

That purse would have been a very dressy item of the era, 1920's or 30's and I am guessing there once was something there that drew a dress up crowd on special occasions. It looks like something a fine lady would have misplaced and probably searched for time and again. It would not be unusual for the purse to be empty also as it was more of a compliment to a ensambo than an actual useful purse. They carried them just to look stylish is what I am trying to say I suppose. May have once carried a small hankerchief or scarf which would have long since rotted away. When you research the site I'm sure you will be nicely surprised. JIM

incredible finds! i think jim is dead on with his dating of the purse to the 20s. it is a spectacular and unusual find. i am sure there was one very unhappy lady once upon a time when she realised she lost it. the coins are incredible as well. thanks for sharing these finds with us.

Could you get a closeup of the links on the purse, the links look neat, how are they held together?
