This is my 2000th post here on TNet!

With temps in the 60's today, I decided to get all my appointments scheduled early so I could hit the woods again. I have cleaned out these woods pretty good. The signals are getting very scarce. I decided to try a steep slope near an old bottle dump. After a few minutes I got a little chirp, with a very high VDI, and then it was gone. After a few more sweeps, the chirp repeated. I pinpointed the spot and tried again with the same result. I thought it was just the wraparound affect of the ground mineralization, which gives those little chirps, but it pinpointed at 9.5 inches so I figured it would be better if I dug and checked it out. I dug a huge plug over 12 inches deep. No signal in the sandy dirt pile, and now no signal in the hole either, not even in pinpoint mode. Ground minerals for sure, I was thinking. I stuck my Vibraprobe 560 into the hole and on the side about 14 inches down got my target. It sure wasn't iron!!! Out popped a nice heavy coin, my eighth copper from these woods. I had no idea if it was a Large Cent or a Colonial until much later, but I knew it was good! It is my oldest US coin so far! I have not checked the variety, so any help is appreciated.

A little while later I dug this odd silver peace medallion. I am not sure if it is silver, it came in just above the pulltab. It almost seams like it was made from a nickel, but the VDI is too high for that!

I also found the remains of an old folding ruler, a small ball button and a glass knob of some type (not pictured).

Neil, I see a Liberty Cap cent in your future! Gave it a quick look and think I lucked out and the first variety I looked at appears to be a match, but only 95% sure, but for now, will stick with this attribution. Sheldon 181

Thanks, Don! Sorry for the picture quality. I prefer natural lighting for my photos, but it was too late for outdoor photos by the time the coin got presentable! I will shoot a few more later in the day.

It definitely looks like the variety you posted in the link, which http://coinfacts.com lists as "VERY SCARCE"!! My specimen has approximately a 35 degree rotated die, which I did not notice until this morning.

Thanks again for the info!
Neil

Great job on doin the diggin on an ify signal.....remember, for future reference. And Great, Great job on cleaning. That is a beautiful coin, and very presentable.
(I find a lot of coins older than yours, here in Korea, but none any prettier than that one.)
