I found this while hunting the site of an old blacksmiths shop. I found it with my old White's 6000. I dug 5 square nails from the hole before this came out. With each nail I took out the signal got better. Most of the coins I found at this site were either smooth or crusty. This has a pretty smooth surface. It pays to dig everything when detecting an early site no matter how much junk you find. Take the junk with you and you won't find it again!

Hey very nice find there! It looks like the '2' in '1802' is stamped over a '0'. Am I crazy or does anybody else see this?

There were no half cents made in 1801 so the mint used the 1800 die, carved a 2 over the 0 and called it done. There were only 20,266 made that year so it is a pretty rare coin. This has the reverse of 1802. The 1800 reverse is much rarer.

It is always a welcome site to see old coppers like yours come out of the ground, nice find. Brian Cross
