Hi everyone. I know this is my 3rd post in two days but hey, with the nice weather I’ve been detecting a lot.
A friend in town called today because the rain had stopped and the radar showed that we had about 90 minutes before the next band of precipitation, so it was time to dig. He invited me to visit a historic home with him here in town; he knows the owners.

And I was lucky enough to find some great large cents!
The nicer one is the 1818 Matron Head; the detail on that coin is fantastic (and after the last few toasted Draped Busts I’ve found I really appreciate one that has detail!).
The older one is a first-year Classic Head from 1808. I used the Andre’s pencils on both of these (no fluids and not even toothpicks), and I only cleaned the Classic Head enough to see the date and “Liberty”. I may touch it up a bit more but I’m afraid to hurt it.

I found a few other items of note (along with trash): a buckle that I need to work on cleaning up, two wheat cents (1920, 1940), a Sunoco Classic car coins series Packard Twin Six token from the 1970’s, and then two mystery items: a red “54” (firefighting related?) and something with 9 holes in it (off a boot?).

Great 90 minute hunt! Can’t wait to go back!
- Brian

The 1818 is so nice. I dream of finding something like that. You owe your friend a beer for taking you to his spot. Gary

Awesome digs!
Beautiful 1818.... I’d lose my mind if I ever found a LC in that great condition.

Oh, the 54 thing?.... it’s from a license plate, before they did renewal stickers, plates had interchangeable tags for the years.

NJ’s was exactly that which you found.

Nice job!! That LC is a beauty, too bad they all don’t come out of the ground like that!

The Packard token cleaned up pretty well with an Andre’s pencil. For aluminum it’s in great shape. All that brown would come off but I tried to leave some for contrast.
It has a little 1968 trademark on it so it looks like that’s when it was made.

The two large cents in the sun after final touch ups. I’m done touching them at this point - I can only hurt them from here.
Thanks for all the great comments!

Congrats on the two large cents. I have dug two 1818s and they were both in really nice condition. Maybe they were a higher grade copper that year?
I once got into a yard that was loaded with those Sunoco antique car tokens. Must have dug 20 of them.
