Maine State Militia Button. Exceptional condition for salty find of this era.
It came out of the gravel below an eroding hillside as shown. all it needed was a freshwater soak.
Granted Statehood in 1820, these large flats were issued shortly thereafter.
Not a fancy design, but one of my favorite military recoveries. thanks for looking !!!

Picking thru the iron pit that is this rocky outcropping, pulled two of the first of US Navy Buttons.
Odd that Tice only lists them as 15mm, I got two 25mms, unfortunately not in good condition.
Also a big 1820s US Marines Flattie. All one piece US Military are sweet digs though.
The site is so full of iron that a copper nail that sat on top of the pile it came out of would give no response, Magnet shows the gravel is full of small iron flakes, in addition to the nails and trap debris.
