Got back out today for a little while to a field that has produced in the past, and today was no different. Second dig of the day was the 1838 large cent. Sadly this is one of the best condition ones I have dug. And is large cent number 7 for me on the year. Then a few feet from the large cent dug the crotal bell. Which also had the wooden button in the hole with it. Never dug a wooden button before, pretty cool looking and in great shape. Anyone have any idea how old that would be? The only other decent dig for the day was the shield nickel. Only took a picture of the back since the front is completely wiped of any detail. All in all a great day. Suppose to rain tomorrow and boy do we need it.

Thanks Jeff. Yeah the back has some good detail on it. The front however is a different story. My 3rd shield nickel and not one of them has a readable date. :(

Great finds. The large cent looks to be in good shape. I "wood" ;D say the button is about 100 years old.

Nice Largie! Nice work on the shield nickel too. I am not basing this on anything but intuition, but the wooden button should be at least early 1900s, but perhaps as far back as mid-1800s. (I really wonder if it's bone rather than wood.) How big is it? Did you find any newer coins or relics at the site?

Best Wishes,

Buckles

Thanks for the comments guys. :icon_thumleft: Hey BB This site has really never yielded anything newer then the mid 1800's. I am pretty sure it is wood though. Not 100% sure but close to it. Its a smidge over an inch as far as size. :icon_thumleft:

I would imagine that bone or porcelain would be a more likely material for a mid-1800s four-hole button--but it could be that we just never find the wooden ones because they don't survive.

In either case, I've never found one, and now I want to find one. :icon_pirat:

Great looking crotal bell, the button is very interesting too. :icon_thumright:
I'm leaning towards the button being made of bone as opposed to wood also. :icon_scratch:

Thanks everyone. I suppose As Dawg said if it were wood it would have been termite food by now. So must be bone. Are bone buttons rare? Or were they common back in the day?

Congrats on the LC! I'd agree that the wood/bone button is mid 1800's I found a ton of them washed up on the shore of a river one year along with a ton of 1800's suspender buckles that I found with the small coil.
