Only had a brief amount of time to get out this morning but sure glad I did. Went back to what has been a very productive wooded area where a house once stood. Have pulled numerous buttons, copper and silver coins dating from late 1700's thru mid 1800's. Today I stepped it up to gold. Minelab Equinox 600 gave me a solid 16 reading from several directions but also a bit of iron tone nearby the target. Dug it anyway as it was very repeatable. Low and behold I see the glimmer of gold coming from the rim of a coin. I gently pulled the coin out and sprayed with some water that I always keep on me. The water rinses the sand away to reveal a beautiflly preserved 1851 No mint mark 2 1/2 dollar gold coin. What a day!!!

Brian, congratulations for scoring one of the holy grails for md'ing ! The proverbial "hole in one" :)

As far as banner : A) Ouch: It is normally held out for persons who are actively posting. Ie.: a longer history of inputs. And I see that you are new, without many inputs so far B) While it's true that gold coins are often a slam-dunk for banner, there have been some, that have come & gone , that didn't get it. Just depends on the story attached, provenance, # of votes, and # of post-participation by the person submitting. I even had one that didn't get banner before . So it's not always a slam dunk.

WOW!

I just checked my bucket. A gold coin is so far fetched for me it's not even on my bucket list or wildest imagination. Way to go!

LOL! Same here. Not on my realistic bucket list either. Most days I have legitimately convinced myself that I'll find a pocket spill of double eagles before finding a single, small denomination gold coin. Too funny.

That said, congrats Brian on finding true, beautiful treasure! Banner vote headed your way!

This is true. My buddy found a 1$ and didnt get it. And we found 2 $2.5 gold coins in February but that thread also died away. I guess gold coins are weird for banner. It's really a guessing game if they are gonna make it.

WOW that's the kind of stuff I dream about finding. Congrats!

Must be a fantastic feeling finding such a beauty. Lady Liberty's pristine lock on her neck...

Way to go on that tiny little gold!
My mom found an 1842 $2 1/2 under a old rug when she bought her house.
Swung my coil over to see what it sounded like AND it was a pull tab signal of course.
Gotta dig that trash :icon_thumleft:

Congrats on what looks an au quarter🤗
Beautiful strike and little ground effects.
My mostly salt recoveries rarely look so beautiful.

Congrats on your First Banner. She sure is a beauty. SD

Amazing coin!!! Congrats :icon_thumleft:

Fantastic find! Looks like it was just dropped there yesterday. Must have been a heartbreak for whoever lost that so long ago. :occasion14:

I've been skunked every time I dig a "16". I think I'll start digging them. Congrats! Great find!

I definitely will continue to dig "16's" forever but I'm guessing 9999 out 10000 times will not be the desired target but never know till you unearth it.

So of course I went back to this area several times now but nothing noteworthy since the gold coin. I surely can't complain as this location has easily produced 20 coins ranging from two KG III's, two Half Reales, numerous Large Cents, a Half Dime, an 1858 quarter, two flying eagles, and too many buttons to count. Definitely satisfied!!! Happy to see this coin made the banner. Will be sending it in for grading and slabbing here within the next week.

Congratulations on the Banner. Very nice.

Awaiting the coin to come back in the mail but ANACS has graded this coin at AU55. Very happy with that for a dug coin!!
