1870 gold dollar!!!

I was given permission to search this site that has a house built in 1865. It's a estate sale so the owner let me dig everything. Right by the bulkhead I get this pull tab sound ,same numbers. If this was a park,I might not dig it but I always do at house sites. Wrapped in the remains of clear plastic was this gold coin.1870. I thought it was fake at first.Who would make a coin this small?? But I looked it up,IT DOES EXIST! I love this machine!!Thanks for looking

Just curious, , I can't find an octagonal shaped 4 dollar coin anywhere. There were California Tokens / Coins produced despite the Coinage Act of 1864. Some coins were made after 1881 and were back dated to the 1850's and 1860's. There were no $4 denominations made.
The only $4 dollar denomination coin I did find was a proposed coin known as The Stella. That was in 1879 and 1880. They were round in shape and were designed by both, Barber and Morgan.
It was also noted that many of the California Tokens were counterfeit and were plated. I would have that coin inspected by a coin dealer.
It's still a sweet find,, Congrats

The pic is bad,my camera wouldn't focus unless it was in my hand.If you saw it,you can see the 1 above the 4
I don't think,I could be wrong, anyone would make a coin this small worth 4 dollars. It's insane it's that size to begin with.

Thanks for the reply. That would make it a fractional California Gold piece. Congrats again. Many of those pieces were reproduced in the 60's. I think I bought a few fakes in a bar one night,, but that's a story for another day. lol

From what I read,these were not legal tender,most were turned into pendants

If never legal tender, then it's a replica of a coin or a fantasy piece; a token, but not a coin.
