1889 Johnstown flood bullet ?

I found this bullet today at this site, this exact site where the soldiers are sitting and laying, due to the severely of the slope this military post has remained untouched. Could this bullet date to the time of this photo ?

any idea on the time period this was produced ? It's 1 and 11/32 inches long

Yes its possible, its UMC so its probably pre 1911. However, it appears to be civilian made ammo, and not something from the military arsenal. Im not sure if the military ever used civilian made ammo like this, or if they only used stuff from their arsenal. Its also a .38 Smith and Wesson, which is not a standard US army sidearm.

thanks, I did find this on an earlier trip, thought at first it was a bayonet but don't think so now. It was eerie, standing there with photo in hand visualizing where these soldiers were so very long ago.......
