Columbus' 400th Anniversary.

:hello:Hi again,

Well, how was I to know that a tornado was headed my way...I've been glued to the U.S Open Tennis matches for many days now.:icon_scratch:

Sooooooo , when I got to a beach "down the line", I was surprised to have rain and dark clouds greeting me, but I was there to detect so that's what I did while hoping that the rain would subside.
???
It did subside for a 3 hrs. hunt :headbang:, but when it got very windy , I headed for the car and home to Tornado warnings on T.V. interrupting the tennis matches.

Hunted wet sand slope and dry sand.

Found a nice big silver Columbian Half Dollar up the beach where the trucks dump out all the scrapings from the beach sand. Yup..sometimes the junk pile holds treasures .

At first I thought it was a Benjamin Half..had never seen ( nor heard of ) the Chicago Expo Columbus coin commemoration. This is the first commemorative coin series minted by the United States.

Here's a link to info about this handsome coin:

Coin Value | Columbian Exposition, Chicago, Half Dollar 1892 and 1893

The silver navel ring with "bling" ( faux) I think was not in the wet sand very long; didn't even need cleaning just had to shake the sand out of it.

Here's some pics

As always, thank you for looking at my post

Lorraine

Neat coin find. Sometimes I'd rather find the obscure than the errant wedding band. Very cool.

P.S. If I can't make an obscure interesting find I will take that ill fitted wedding band.

How did it get there??? (the half)
It looks clean. I'd just love to know it's history.

Whether the weather be hot or or cold,
it's off to the beach for the brave and bold!

My husband and I were just talking about that; it couldn't have been there too long because it's barely tarnished.

I don't want to clean it and thereby reduce its value when I am ready to sell the coin.

We were thinking that perhaps it belonged in a family heirloom and someone carelessly took it to the beach and it fell out of their pocket :dontknow:

Whether the weather be hot or or cold,
it's off to the beach for the brave and bold!
Doesn't matter if we find silver or gold
It's fun just to listen, dig and then hold!

Did you look up to see what it is worth? Seems like that could be rare. Nice find. I wonder if they called him Christopher Columbus back then, I thought that was a fairly recent US thing. I didnt see it on the coin.

Steve there were about 950,000 minted.... or should i say released. Thats a lot since not many were sold at a $1 each..... then for a short time they were released into circulation at face value. Im not certain of the weight or how much silver are in them. Thats a great find period.....

It always amazes me....the stuff people bring to the beach?? I guess if they didnt, it would make our hobby less interesting though... Awsome find.
