I found this button on my USA site. It's one of my favorite sites. It's not just because it gave me 2 beautiful USA buttons, it's given me Jerseys, Connecticuts, Georges and many 18th century buttons and sleeve buttons. This button was completely covered in iron. The more I cleaned off the more it looked like gold. I gave it an acid test and it came up as gold. It's 22mm. It's I'm not sure what to make of it.:icon_scratch: gold button.jpg gold button 2.jpg

Not so sure its solid gold but openwork buttons like that were sometimes used in the late 18th century. I have only found a few though. Why was it covered in iron

The intricate detail yet unbroken links leads my gut to say gold... but what do I know.

I do know to trust my gut more than most other parts of me....

Maybe it is a gold button that was in a container that rusted?

Good chance it had an iron back. How did you clean it?

I think it was a broach on a hat. A rich persons hat. Sewn on.
