I just got a 1973 Kennedy half dollar and both sides are of kennedy's face! There is no reverse on it! Does anyone know about this error and if it is worth anything? I will post a picture later after I'm done searching my dime rolls.
I really don't know... Maybe the coin was accidently put through the machine twice? Are you sure there is just one die for each year? I would assume that there would be multiple dies to make coins faster and maybe the coin was put through two face dies in a row?
There have been a few coins in the past that have left the mint with two heads but it is not likely, look at the edge of your coin, if there are visible seems then two half dollars were cut in half and stuck together. If no seam is visible it was most likely done on a computer controlled machine lathe. Maybe you should post some pics and take it to a coin store Nice find if its real or fake.
I got really bored and made a quarter this way years ago. There is some machine shop online that does variation coins like this, I forget the address but I believe his big thing at the moment is to mate a sacajawhatever dollar and a quarter. I know he sells them and the mint says it is legal as they are not sold as legal tender coinage.
Pretty funny to find that in change although I know someone found my quarter I am sure the same way. My idiot self spent it accidentally.
Drop it on a counter top. It will make a thud when it hits. Now drop a non altered Kennedy half..........hear the difference?
All magician's coins you find will have that thud sound to them when they are dropped on a hard counter top (or tossed on a pile of other halves). I've got about 22 of them so far. About three are either double heads or tails. I like finding them too, something different!
