MIAMI -- A Florida-based salvage company says it has found the wreck of a 198-year-old Swedish merchant vessel off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.

Key West-based Blue Hole Expedition is asking a Miami federal judge to declare it the owners of the Swedish ship Briggen Hialmar, built in 1812. The company says it found the wreck about 600 miles off St. Johns, Newfoundland in international waters. It's located more than 16,000 feet deep.

There's no estimate of the shipwreck's value. Using a remote operating vehicle, court documents say the company so far has salvaged the ship's bell, some personal items and a copper pot.

A federal judge on Tuesday gave Blue Hole temporary custody of the ship and its contents. A final decision will come later.
