Hello all! After a horrible week it was great to get out yesterday to get some fresh air, see some good friends & save some history. My favorite find is the iron stirrup (a first for me). Any way to date these? I ordered a power supply today so I can do electrolysis, the stirrup will be my first project. I also found a nice assortment of other relics. Any help on the age of the spoon handle & little buckle would be appreciated. (Use notebook paper lines for size ref) Thanks for looking & HH!

Mangum, Nice finds. I started doing electrolysis about a few months ago. I am hooked. What a difference it makes to some relics. I will attach some before and after pics of my 1700's-1800's stirrup I found and preserved.

////// Wow! That turned out fabulous! Thanks for sharing

Nice assortment of relics Josh. There's an almost identical example of your stirrup in my Neumann & Kravic book that dates to the late 1700s, which also matches up nicely with the tombacs. But I think that spoon handle and gilted buckle date a bit later, probably 1850-1900, as do some of your other finds. Nice hunt!
Thanks Bill! The site is an old ghost town that dates from the late 1700s & not too much is found past the early 1900s. I'm thrilled that the stirrup is that early. Thanks for the help on dating that & some of my other finds. It can get tricky when you have a site that covers so many time periods.

Great assortment of relics Mangrum. Could your spoon be pewter? If so it looks Colonial era to me. A friend of mine found one dated 1700's that was similar. I'll see in a bit if I can find out what the back of hers looked like.
Thanks! I'm not sure of the composition on the spoon. I think it's in too good of shape to be pewter. Bill D thinks the spoon dates 1850-1900.

Great day I'd say!!! In the last picture you have a relic labeled lantern wick. I have dug 2 of those (along side CW bullets) and had no idea what they were. Thanks for labeling! Can you or someone put up a link to show me how it looked on a working lantern. I can't seem to locate one. Thanks! This part is hidden on complete lamps by the domed piece. I'm pretty sure the spoon handle is very late 19th c - possibly early 20th , The line work on it appears commonly in "roller patterned "
work from this later industrial age ,In contrast to a hand forged ("smithed") look we associate with a "Colonial" period utensil.

Hi there- nice finds. If you have ordered a battery charger for electrolysis, make sure its not one of the AUTO ones. The safety mech wont allow for what you want to do. The older manual type is what you need! (alternatively any old mobile phone charger works perfect!)
