Walked 30 feet, dug 5 holes (2 buttons, 1 wheatie) and then the rain came in angry!

Now, this Great Seal button seems a little different than the last one I dug. The tail feathers(wider), legs(look like turkey drumsticks compared to others), and back are all different (last one had a loop shank). I'm having a little trouble trying to date this one and find these features...any ideas or link I can see the approx. date?

Thanks for looking and have a great day!

TokenMan, your Great Seal button's very unusual form, having an extremely high-raised rim and an iron/steel "self-shank back," indicates it is a pseudo-military imitation made for civilian coats. In particular, iron/steel backs tend not to be used on actual military uniforms because the back eventually gets rusty, staining the uniform. Also, military buttons tend not to have a self-shank back, because it makes the button fit tight up against the cloth, causing the button to be difficult to fit through thick cloth like a woolen uniform coat. The photo below shows a 1920-50s iron/steel self-shank back, which is what is on your button.

Thanks cjon-I agree, buttons are some of my favorite finds too. Have a great day...we are to get 2" of rain today, so I guess I will be cleaning some relics :)
