HILLSBORO, Ore. – A large number of gold nuggets were stolen from the Rice NW Museum of Rocks and Minerals in Hillsboro last Saturday.

Investigators said the loot included one gold piece that weighed 42 ounces and was valued at over $50,000.

Linda Kepford, the Assistant Director of the museum, told deputies that the thieves passed by the other gems and only took the gold. The entire collection had been appraised at more than $250,000.

Just what Harvey may have planned to do with the gold is still unclear. Some of the gold was packaged and ready to be shipped to an online-gold-buying metal refinery, such as Cash4Gold.com, Thompson said, who melt down the precious metals to resell them.

There was also a display case there that had smaller gold nuggets In small miners pans that wasnt mentioned in the story. There was probably 30 pans with gold from different mines in the northwest and I would guess there was a couple of pounds of pencil eraser size nuggets in each pan. There was nothing mentioned of those at all.
I went to that museum last year and was amazed by all the stuff that they had there including meteorites and a opal thunderegg about 50 inches in diameter. The museum is in two buildings Including basements. If you ever get a chance go and see it.
