27 silver coins in yesterday's 4 hour hunt - still can't believe it!
Yesterday was only my second time out turf detecting in the past month since I got back from Cape Cod on August 1st. I had such a great time finding rings in the water on Cape Cod that I just didn’t have the strong urge to get out digging in the dirt.
Well, yesterday I got the urge, and since the kids are now back in school, I had a day to myself. So, I went back to the “field of dreams” that I’ve written about in the past, and had the property owner unlock a fence so I could detect a new area that I hadn’t tried yet. Holy cow – I couldn’t swing the coil without hearing a symphony of tones from my E-Trac. I knew there were tons of metal pipes and old metal sprinkler heads in the ground, which was the source of many of my signals, but I decided to just slow down and focus on the high tones to see what I could come up with.
In 4 hours, I had 27 silver coins, which brought me to 100 silvers for the year!!! My goal at January 1st was to find 25 silver coins this year, and I really can't believe I've found 100 since the first of the year. I've probably found less than 50 silver coins in all the years I've been detecting prior to this year. It just goes to show you that RESEARCH and PERMISSION are the cornerstones to great finds!
The 27 silvers were:
1 Standing Liberty Quarter – 1930
4 Washington Quarters
9 Mercury Head Dimes
13 Silver Roosevelt Dimes
In addition, I found 45 wheat cents that I have not checked the dates on yet.
The incredible thing is that the only clad I found was 4 dimes, and I found 23 Memorial pennies.
I am terribly sore today, as the 4 hours of kneeling and standing, and digging in the sun baked hard dirt took their toll on me. I hope to get back to this spot next week, as long as the property owner ok’s it again, and he’s there to let me in. I plan to switch to a small elliptical coil on the E-Trac or Explorer II, and grid off a 5’ x 5’ or 10’ x 10’ section and just concentrate on cleaning it out.
One of the problems I had trying to cherry pick the silver, was that many of the wheat cents were reading as 44 or 45 on the conductivity scale, and sometimes the silver dimes read as low as 44/45. I ended up skipping over a bunch of 44 readings, some of which could very easily have been silver dimes. This is why I want to go back and grid off a small area to focus on clearing it out.
Happy Hunting!
