MADURAI: A three-year-old boy accidentally came upon a treasure trove under a fallen tree
in a village near Sholavandan in Madurai on Saturday,
officials said.

Four small gold bars about four inches long, 21 beads made of gold, each weighing about 20 to 40 grams each, and 31 tiny, flat button-like items of gold were found in an earthen pot that the boy stumbled upon. There was some writing etched on the gold bars, while the buttons had some designs on them.

A tree that had stood in the middle of a vacant plot belonging to Sonaimuthu of Thenur near Sholavandan had been uprooted about two months ago by strong winds. The village is known to be of historical significance and has been mentioned in ancient literature. The tree itself is believed to be about 100 years old and it was not removed from the spot after its fall.

A villager, Manjula, wife of Selvam had taken her son Arjun (3) to the field on Saturday morning. The boy was digging the earth near the fallen tree when he came upon an earthen pot with a lid. On seeing her son playing with the pot, the woman opened it and found that the gold items.

Village administrative officer Uma Devi and Madurai North Tahsildar A Ilamathy rushed to the spot and seized the collection of items. The trove was later brought to the tahsildar's office. The tahsildar said the value and age of the gold items would be known only after archeologists inspected it. The entire place was crowded with people who started digging around for more treasure, but they returned empty-handed.
