If memory serves, there are 2 types of '81 proofs...one of which probably would carry a little more value than your average impaired proof.

Type I and Type II.

You have to look at the "S".

OP's coin appears (from what I can tell, the picture isn't super clear to me) that it is a Type I coin.

The Type I is the one that isn't valuable.

Sooooo I'm brand new to metal detecting. I go thru my pocket change also. I'm trying to learn what to look for. How can u tell if a coin is a proof?

Mirror like surface and Kennedy profile, or whoever is on the coin, would(should) have a frosted look to it-like the one pictured here

If you do a google search it will give you pics and helo you see exactly what a proof coin looks like-
