Went out this evening for a few hours at my favorite spot. The ground was moist from yesterdays rain so I decided to hit the area that I found the two colonial coppers earlier in the season. I changed my strategy a little this time and bumped up the discrimination just enough to tune out some of the iron bits and pieces I was digging before. It seemed to work because about an hour into the hunt I got this nice George II copper dated 1734! It was 6 or 7 inches down and was a real surprise when it popped out. Usually I will get a quarter reading on a copper coin like this but the signal was jumping around a little so I figured it wasn't a coin. In this case I'm happy to be wrong. The pictures really don't do it justice but this coin has great detail. I think it must have been lost when it was quite new. The other coins that came out of this area (within 50FT) were 1723 and 1695ish (no date visible). I wonder if there's still more there?

Nice find...and to answer your question about whether there is more there or not...you won;t know if you dont hit it again and again. Good luck and hopefully you may pull some old silver out of there as well!!

Beauty! It's all about the site. All you need is a detector and a few batteries.

Thank you! This place is a mowed field that I had no idea contained a colonial site when I first started looking there. I just happened to find an area that started to produce old iron and I knew that I had an old homesite. Once you stand back you can definitely see a slight impression in the ground where the house once stood. I just got lucky finding it though. I'm headed to the historical society tomorrow to check the old maps and see what else may have been around this area.

That coin really is in fantastic condition - and yes I believe there are more coins there! By the way, how big is the field and how often have you hit it? The reason I ask is because I've been hunting an approximately 100 acre woods (not all 100 acres are searchable) since June 2006 (I've giving it a break in the last month) that has produced colonial coppers, spanish 1/2 & 1 reales, large cents, a capped bust half dime and a seated half dime, plus more. It wasn't until July of this year and after at least 60 times to these woods, that I found a 1787 Massachusetts large cent in excellent condition. So I would keep hitting that field till I thought it was hunted out, and then hit it again.
