researched the old topo maps last night, hoping for some old homesites near a large sandpit company in nearby town. (hoping to get some of those 'Sugar Sand' finds like you Carolina Hunters).
Nothing shown on the maps I had, I went anyway.
Spent most of the day back & forth, following rock walls, lots of falsing from the decayed barbed wire, Then, a solid copper hit, Draped Cent 1802, my best yet, the fraction is clear, though not in photo :dontknow: this alone would have made my day,
but the sun was out & high 30's, keep swingin.
next signal Figured another shotgun shell, Diggit, OMG, 58 Flying Eagle, And just fine condition.(couple light scratches) My First! came across a workshop or homesite, no foundation, iron blanking everything, pulled an axehead, 2 big old files, a big old brass plumbing trap, & 2 capguns, (my 2nd of the longhorn),
also a wheat Cent.
moving on, suns getting low, figure it's time to head back now, uh oh, another copper hit, Bingo! a '23 Large Cent! (think it's a 'narrow date', numbers are really close.
well I'm ready to call it a day, but ya know ya gotta clean this stuff, whoa, its a 1909 wheat, I remember there's some valuable ones out there, research, I'm looking for an S, no go, next a VDB, but where is it?, there it is, almost invisible at bottom reverse, Worth about 7 bucks, can't retire on this one,
BUT, My Best Day in a LONG TIME :hello2:
Thanks for Looking & HH to All!
Almost forgot this, bottom photo, is this my first barrel tap key?

Thanks Mainer,
All of us up here in the northeast are blessed with these above average temps.
seems both mid atlantic & midwest are already locked in, anywhere there is leaf cover here in NH, the ground is still workable.
Oh, I got a lot of big coppers from where the marsh grass has died down and those roots just eat the details, and leave their own imprint.
I've become pretty good at Id'ing them from the wreath pattern, and in my book, an ID'ed copper is a keeper, (heck, so are the blanks!) the Drapeds wreaths remind me of Deer tracks, I included 2 examples below, first one is a draped, you can see a channel cut across it by the root, the obverse is gone, the second is a coronet just plain eaten up by that grass. My best saltwater mud finds come from the blue clay, or sometimes coarse gravel under the mud, this is also what keeps them from sinking into the depths.
Get on out for another hunt before years end! Best wishes to You!

You must mean Red Clay, I could only wish for sugar sand.

Great finds as usual !
Hi Mike!
Thanks for your reply, yesterday was one of my best days! :hello2:
I remember posts with superb buttons from sugar sand, Where is that stuff?
We have many inland areas with Yellow sand under the topsoil.
Also a blue clay that stops coins from sinking, and preserves them nicely.
do finds preserve well in your red clay?
The eagle was just above one of these clay layers, Happy Holidays & Best Wishes! Herbie.

Thanks Willy!
I think it may have been tradition to toss a coin at spots where they meet.
Either that, or they fell from pockets during the work.
My W&M 1694 was found under the rocks at the intersection of 3 walls.
Best to You & Happy Holidays! Herbie
