Today I tried to reach a homestead from another way in and to make a long story short, a 20 foot wide stream changed my plans! ::)

So, I decided to follow the banks of the stream, which of course were solid with green briar bushes, and head back slowly to my truck and go somewhere else.

As I neared my truck, I saw a tiny deeply cut narrow stream ahead and started to detect as I headed towards the bank of the stream. As soon as I got to the bank, I got a coin signal, but the depth indicated less than 4 inches. So I was sure it was going to be modern trash.

Wrong, just under the humus layer, about 2 inches total in the ground was this large cent! My 99th one!!!
I took some photos of the dig, and then grid hunted the small opening where brush was not too thick and got nothing else.

Seems like January was the month of one Large Cent coin per hunt only allowed. :)

It cleaned up fairly well, the soil in this area is usually not kind at all to coppers so I did not expect it to be even as good as it was. So, it is an 1827, at least all four Large Cents this month have been different years. 1802,1822,1827 and 1829.......

*X* marks the spot! That's great, Don. :o

Great before and after pics. Do you use a toothpick on those coins.....to pick the crud off.......after soaking them in HP? ::)

Lisa, a total cleaning time of about 2 hours, of which I gently used a bunch of HP soaked q-tips and no toothpicks to remove the crud. I did have to reheat new fresh peroxide, since the reverse side had a cement type like calcified coating on it, but the HP and cotton swabs were enough to removed the coating.

the patina on this coin is speckled, meaning starting to deteriorate :(

Wow :o. Less than 1 month into the new year and your 4th large cent. You are on fire. Great job and a coin that is in good shape too.
