Day off so me and my son went out for a little bit to a sports field after it stopped raining. We were detecting for about 2 hours total. Found the usual clad and trash....and 4 silver! including our first silver dime ever! But I really am excited about the war nickel, I've never seen one in person!

After a few months of not much other than clad, this was an awesome day!

One question, our dime looks really nice, can anyone estimate it's grade and value? My son (10 yo) is dying to know...

HH!

Some really nice finds! Good for both you and your son!

I would grade your 1942 Mercury dime as XF40 (MS40) based on James F. Ruddy's Photograde. I would also encourage you to seek out a copy of this great book, as it looks like you will be needing it more and more.<G>

And value, well it is just a guess, but I think it is worth more melted than it is as a collection coin. But that doesn't mean you should melt it! It is just the status of the world these days. Mercs are so cool. Go to a coin store and start a Merc album. Usually, they have some used ones that they purchased the collection from that they sell for a buck or less. I started one, and I have only 1 repeat with 10 or 12 holes filled. Let's you see how you are progressing.

That's a great idea to get a merc book...we have a penny book, mostly full from previous collecting (not MD'ing)

A merc book would be fun!
