Newbie question
Can you tell a 40% coin in an edge search?

Just did my first sealed $500 bag and meticulously stacked all the dates. Nothing under 1971 so I have no reference for the 40% coins.

All I got out of the bag was a 85s which has seen a lot of circulation and a 87d in which JFK does not appear as frosty and the background does not have much of a mirrored finish as the 85s.

Anyway did a quick edge search of my second bag and definitely no 90%ers but was wondering if the 40%ers would jump out at me?

The 40% ones I have found show all grey on the edge, not showing the copper core. That is just my experience though.

After separating all the coins by date I then went through and checked for the following errors:

1971D:: Double die (Trust)
1972: Double Die (Trust)
1973D: Double die (Trust)
1974D :: Double Die - the (Trust) is doubled, look at the RUS in the word TRUST.
1977D Double Die (Trust)
1982 :: No FG (FG designers initials missing from back)
1983 :: No FG (FG designers initials missing from back)
1990 :: No FG (FG designers initials missing from back)

I found none. But this whole process took forever. I think there has to be a better way...

Most 40%ers you can tell by the whitish edge with the copper strip missing. However there are a few that are tricky, and actually you can see a bit of copper. Typically I do not go coin by coin, but by the edges, anything that looks silver on the edge at all I check, Anything thicker and brigher I check, as sometimes these are proofs. Anything thinner then usual and sometimes darker , check, as many times these are the pre kennedy coins. The Bens usually are thick and white. Getting into the walkers and before usually they are noticably thinner and maybe not quite so whitish on the edge. Anything about the edge that looks unusual, check! Just my 50 cents.

The Walkers I've found are bright silver with worn grooves.

Most 40% and 90% you can tell by the edge, but I have found at least 1 - 90% in a casino that if you didn't read the date you would have sworn it was clad as edge was completely copper colored and worn flat by casino use. I had been edge searching in the casino due to lighting issues and only found this coin due to the sound it made. After that I went slower and date searched. Glad I did as I would have missed 2 -40% as well. Only ended up with 4 silvers that day 3 would have been missed by edge searching. Granted those are casino coins which are tougher due to wear.

A 90% silver coin wouldn't have any copper color in or on the edge of it. was it some error coin?

No, it was not an error. I beileve it had banged against so many copper coins in slot machines that it had a completely copper colored edge. Note: there was no silver showing. I tried to take a picture, but it didn't really do it justice. I still have it upstairs somewhere.

The bags I get come from Louisiana, probably from casinos too, and some edges are worn completely smooth.
I wonder if I'm getting LJ's rejects, cuz lately I'm not finding jack squat. :-\

Garrett Ace 250 of course
The 40% are silver plated. Some I have found have the plating worn off on the edge and yo ucan see the copper. Most look like silver on the edge. I look for key dates not just edges so none will slip by me.
