Yesterday I was invited to detect with my buddy (jimmydiggins) at one of his permissions. Started off with a few flat buttons and a bale seal. Got a deep 1-12 on the ctx. Thought it was a colonial button. After brushing lightly I seen some detail, but had no idea what it was till I textd my buddy VMI Digger. Instantly he knew what I had. This is my first regimental button!! Thanks Jonathan!!

I'm not so sure. It's very interesting but I am not convinced it's 42nd because the "4" is not at all in line with the crown. I've actually dug three of the 42nds you show the picture of so I am very familiar. Can I post it to a discussion group to see what they have to say? Also a British 42nd would usually have an iron shank... yours looks like it may have been a pewter shank.

I mentioned when I received the text pictures that the variety was not an exact match, however the crown design is spot on. The back does appear to bear the remnants of an integrated cast shank.

That's what makes it interesting... but I'm not sure I'd say "not an exact match" because there is quite a difference, really. Even with the picture on the side I could tell it was different.

Shame it not all there, but at least you saved it. Make sure you preserve that one, as it will turn to dust.
