How much you dig depends more on how well you can pin point , and depth of target.
If the coin is at an angle, the coin will not be at the location you have pinpointed.

Assuming that the coin is flat and not on edge:
Larger is Betta, Mo Larger is Mo Betta

You would get an improvement, but probably not as much as you were hoping for
as a six inch scoop is only 1.44 times larger than a five inch scoop.

A five inch scoop has a surface area of 78.5 square inches
and a six inch scoop has a surface area of 113.04 square inches.
The six inch scoop will only cover an area 1.44 times larger.

In school I learnt that the area of a circle is PIE R SQUARED.
This just doesn't seem right as everyone on the farm knows
that CORN BREAD ARE SQUARE and PIE ARE ROUND?

I have been told that five inch scoops are mostly used on dry sand to save weight
where a fast retrieval is not as important as in the water
where the object must be recovered rapidly before the hole fills in.

If you going bigger just to have bigger than look at the newer scoops that have just come on the markets. They are 8in accross and are much lighter than the SS 6in scoops. Can't post a name here! I have been using one as demo for a year. I won't leave home without it!

Gee I use a 6" scoop for the beach and also find myself digging a lot to retrieve items .

At times I am able to retrieve an object in the water on the first scoop, more often it takes 3 scoops, and 5 or more scoops if the object is deep (sigh).

At minimum, I am considering a 7" wide scoop. From the posts I have seen, wider scopes of 8" to 9" work better with a 10" DD coil in the water, as you want to be able to retrieve your object in the water on the first dig fast before the target sinks/hole fills in.
