$50 Bag of Cents Sorted for Cu in Under 16min

Every now and then, I goof around with my home made cent sorters. I've got a couple of ideas on how to make dramatic improvements to the process of sorting cladded Zn from Cu-alloy cents and one of these days, I'ma gonna do it. In the mean time, I tweak the sorters I've made.

Last night, I decided that I was going to run my latest sorter as close to the theoretical maximum as possible (the comparator is capable of 8 coins per second). The hopper motor is rated for 24VDC, but should tolerate 30V-32V for reasonable durations if the torque load is reasonable. That is where I was running it, just over 30V.

In any event, I was seeing rates of 7 to 7.5 coins sorted per second and was able to sort a $50 bag in just over 15min. It would have been about 13min if not for 4 jams/clogs.

Videos are linked rather than embedded. You'll probably see enough by just watching the first and last one, but I included all of them because it shows the total elapsed time of sorting. Each video ends with a clog and I spend about 20 seconds clearing the clog before starting the next video. For the video that doesn't end in a clog, I had to "stir" the hopper with a screwdriver because when the level of coins gets very low, the hopper agitator doesn't stir them anymore. I stopped the video to do the stirring.

You'll see that the end count is greater than 5000 coins. That is because the coins that clog get counted and when I clear the clog, I throw those back in the hopper for sorting. That results in a double count of those coins.

MrSchulz, as coinflip confirms the cost is not the prohibitive factor. It is getting the parts to work together.

The parts can be easily acquired for about $70 - less if you shop around and get lucky. It takes a lot of effort and frustration to get everything to click just right. I built one and worked out the kinks with it and then built a 2nd one and had to work kinks out of it. If I was to build a 3rd one of similar design, it would require kinks to be worked out.

I do have a concept of a sorter that, by design, cannot clog or jam. Someday, I'll get it show-and-tell worthy and will show-and-tell about it. It will be one that almost anybody could put together from common parts (sub $100 worth of parts reclaimed from slot machines).

I've been working on one with Madwests advice. I can see its not for those easily discouraged or expecting instant success. It requires alot of tunning and even then I occasionally go from 99.9% sort success to 50% because something got out of whack.
