In Hong Kong, the glitter of diamonds is drawing stares of fascination. A large, shimmering pear-shaped white diamond goes on auction next week at an anticipated selling price of more than 10-million dollars. It's the highlight among a treasure trove of exquisite gems going on the block.

The 72.22 carat gem is the largest pear-shaped D-colour, flawless diamond ever to appear at auction in Asia. Bidding is expected to be fierce.

The rare gem was cut from an original rough diamond weighing 188.11 carats. It was mined in South Africa. Experts say the diamond possesses outstanding brilliance and clarity. It's to go on sale at Sotheby's spring auction.

The white diamond may be among the most valuable ever auctioned. However, experts say it is unlikely to surpass the selling price of two diamonds sold in Europe over the past few years.

Terry Chu, deputy director of Jewellery Department, Sotheby's, said, "Especially in Asia, we find a lot of people have become interested in the recent past, in the very, very good quality diamond colour stones and jewelry. That's why we chose Hong Kong as the site to sell this diamond."
