8 Reale Cob 'NOT' But I found a Boat !

Back at Cob Cove dawn this morning.
Got a ringer 12-38 on the Etrac, then dug a target that looked just like my Cob but twice the size :o
(thoroughly encrusted with sand, and irregular shape) Twas not to be, after breaking crust, just a lead slag piece.
Further on i got a copper Flat & other small button, Doughboy gunner, and a Cub Scout neckerchief thingie, banner says 'Strengthen the Arm of Liberty' with Statue image, and 1932 NH Dog Tax tag.
Near the end of my hunt I got a deep copper signal, about 18" down I see wood,
so I clear it by hand, & see a large timber.
Excavate more & remove a 4 foot section of the timber.
Copper rivets inserted from exterior, washer placed & peened over.
ribs tenoned through the 6 X 5" timber at 10" intervals.
I believe the rest of the vessel is down there, no idea of size or what it was used for.
I do know that boat remains on surface I've found have rich finds in the ballast.
If anyone is familiar with old boat building, I would appreciate any info on the date of this type of construction.
I will eventually excavate this vessel, it may take me a while.
To end the day, a 7 ounce Rogue (Oregon) Russian Imperial Stout, Like thick coffee wine ;D
Thanks for looking & HH to all :hello:

I bet you almost had a "Cob Cardiac Event" this morning Herbie. When we go hunting in Tennessee, we can pretty well predict what we will find each time. When you go hunting, the sky is the limit. Nice finds again Herbie, HH, Quindy.

I love the patriotic scout slide ! Anything with lady liberty on it is a keeper  Can't help with the age of the boat and won;t help with digging it out :laughing7: I hope there is a treasure in it just waiting for you though  MaineRelic

Re: 8 Reale Cob 'NOT' But I found a Boat !

Coming from a scouting family, I just had to google the neckerchief slide. :read2:
The price differs from several sites, so don't get too excited, but this one shows the reverse:
http://www.drexelantiques.com/scouting3.html and says,

"Cub Scouts Strengthen The Arm Of Liberty Neckerchief Slide. A rare slide. 1950. The Boy Scouts of America choose this as the theme for the 40th anniversary of Scouting. As a service project scouts raised funds that commissioned hundreds of 8 1/2 foot tall replicas of the Statue of Liberty to be given to various towns, and etc. Some still exist today. The boy scouts got pins, the cub scouts neckerchief slides. Copper plated or solid copper. Light wear and tarnish. I would not polish it. 1 1/2 x 2 inches. $42.50 item #6108"

and Wikipedia talks about the campaign to put the replica statues all over the US, and also, "A Strengthen the Arm of Liberty brass pin was also available for uniform and civilian wear. The pin is in the shape of the Statue of Liberty superimposed on a fleur de lis. The Robbins Company, which made BSA's Eagle medals for many years, made these pins and the winged "R" hallmark is prominently displayed on the reverse. In addition, a commemorative neckerchief slide was made for Boy Scouts and for the Cub Scouts."

I can't see the corner clearly in your picture to see what level of Cub Scouts it's for, but it seems to be Cub level rather than Scouting (they had the fleur de lis).

Very cool stuff! :icon_thumright: Keep us posted on that boat!

Boat Wood from the 1800's and before usually looks more like SkyPirate's piece of wood.

Still, it looks like an adventure of sorts.

Might post some pics of last summer up later with some wood specimens. Got to charge the camera battery up first though.

Thanks Tigger, great info & link :hello:
This one has 'Cub Scouts BSA' with wolfshead in diamond on upper right,
and 'Strengthen the Arm of Liberty' on Banner. an exact match to link.
1950 only. Awesome ID :notworthy:

Re: 8 Reale Cob 'NOT' But I found a Boat !

Skypirate & CuzcoSquirrel,
Thanks for the help on the vessel ID,
Love that wooden peg construction on the pictured beam ;D
The appearance of wood is heavily dependent on where wood has been,
I have been excavating another vessel that has produced many coins and military buttons dating between 1800 & 1860s, most of its buried timbers are still in great shape.(in a dense low oxygen clay) The only hardware in the timbers on that vessel are square brass spikes.
(some loose ones recovered shown at left in photo)
This new boats rivet & washer hardware is probably a later development.
I think that this vessel is an 18-20 foot dory about a century old.
Local people are still making the same style boats ( with different hardware, plain round copper spikes )
I believe the hardware would be the key to date rather than woods condition.
great finds & HH to all

Recommend you post your query in the shipwrecks forum as there is a lot of knowledge and talent that reside there. Maybe someone can narrow the date range down for you.

Bushido,
Pretty much can't go wrong with Rogue.
Dead Guy is good :occasion14:
My current favorite is the Juniper Ale.
Though I am not a practicing monogamist. (as far as beer goes) ;D
