well the day started real slow with nothing but on single lone Indian head - 1884.

then it was around 6:30 and just when I thought the day was gonna be pretty bleak... I got a signal that read 10" and looked good and sounded good. i dug and dug and after what seened like forever - out popped this - a 1787 Spanish reale! Man was I happy!!!!!!!
I could not believe it.

Then since I knew reales were in the area - i went ultra slow - listening for the fainted whispers. And I got one not 12" away. It was reading 10" deep. I had trouble pinpointing but finally got the spot and started to dig. It was another 10" plus hole.

Finally at bottom my electronic PP gave me a signal.
Using my hand i felt the coin and out popped another reale. I thought to myself - I must be dreaming but nope it was 1789 Spanish reale! this signal would have fooled 99 out of 100 MDers IMO - even me if I hadn't found that 1st reale nearby.

these are the first spanish reales I ever dug. this was a banner day!? ?

thanks ladies and gents!

allyourbase - I use the Minelab Explorer II. Purchased last Sept. Still learning it but best decision I could have made. I looked at all the top of line models - garrett, white's, minelab. I'm sold on Minelab.
HH! :)

Hey O7, great finds. I found two in one day next to each other last August, but they were not in as great a condition as yours. way to go....Lance

thanks, Lance. I never realized they were the same size as a dime until now.

short history lesson - these are One reales or 1/8 reales. the reason they are called that is because they represented 1/8 of a spanish dollar or 12.5 cents US. Oddly enough our dime today (10 cents) is the same size as this coin.

a Two reale would have been 25 cents US.

A piece of 8 or Spanish Dollar was a full dollar coin.

These Spanish coins were legal tender until 1857 in the US.

:o Great finds on the 2- Reale coin. I live In Jacksonville, FL. Been MD'ing for 15 years first with a Garrett MXII, now a Minelab Explorer XS, mostly at the beach. As a construction engineer inspector, I receive updates on construction sites in the down town area, especially the sidewalk removal area's. I have not visited these area's yet, but have heard that finds are expected. Great Hunting !!!!
