Haven't been on in a while, nor really hunted. The ground has been dry and hard as brick and I've been busy. I got out today for a quick hunt at an old site and had some good luck. First up was a King George the 2nd. Looks like a 1738. It came in at a 12-35 on the CTX which was really low compared to my other three dozen+ KG's. Even the counterfeits. My guess is it's a toasty counterfeit but that just goes to show- dig everything.

Next was a Jersey copper. Looks like a 1786. Rang in at a 12-41 on the CTX and is my first state copper! Finally!!! I have dug 1771-1777 KG3's and then a gap all the way to an 1790 1 Duit and a 1794 One cent. Never a state copper so it feels really damn good. I packed it in after the NJ copper and now it's time for a cold pint.

Happy hunting everyone Steve

Congrats on the big coppers. I haven't even dug one this year.

good job on the state copper steve! Gotta love hitting them coppers, such loud ridiculous signals almost seem too good to be true

Nice job on the coppers- and congrats on your first state coin!

Congratulations on your first State Copper and being a NJ always picques my interest. I did the best I could on identifying the year and variety and it is most certainly a 1787 Maris 48 Obverse and the reverse seems to be the most common "g" reverse. Which makes it a 1787 Maris 48-g variety, the 2nd or 3rd most common variety reported found in the survey. Could you PM me the county found in, assuming it was found in NJ. :) Don 1787 New Jersey Copper - Maris 48-g I combined your two photos into one to help me ID the variety.

Hey thx bud. They were both strange signals and the NJ copper was barely audible. This was a site I worked hard so I'm surprised I found anything. When I get settled into a new site of mine that I haven't started yet I'll get you and Chon down for a good copper hunt.

The KG2 was clear and loud for sure but read like an IHP. The roached NJ coin sounded like a penny and was almost inaudible. Just strange brother.

Steve

Congratulations on the copper's. I'm still looking for my first large cent. Lol

Thanks for the ID Don. I PM'd you the info. The history of these state coins is amazing. However, my wife remained somewhat unimpressed.

I love them Jorsey coins too! If I had a choice of a State copper it would have been an NJ.

You're in good company...my wife couldn't care less about by Banner CT copper when I found it, while I was on Cloud Nine not only being my first state copper, but amazing condition as well (esp for NJ soil!). Congrats on the NJ copper--would still love to find one of those!
