Re: A couple of KG's. One counterfeit +other relics

a lot of people think immediately that some of their "coppers" are counterfeits
there were plenty of counterfeits made - but I found one that went off like
junk too - it went off really low - like in the 30's on my XLT - where most coppers
would go off at 64+
I thought for sure it was a piece of can slaw - but some small tombacs will go off in this range
plus I usually dig everything
- I pulled out what looked like a KG - but it felt lighter
and was discolored funny - looked like rust in some spots
had my partner go over with his machine - and he said the same - sounded like crap
and thought it was probably a counterfeit too
BUT - there was a year and design that they tried adding tin with the copper to make
the coins cheaper I read
so yours may be one of those

Nice digs :icon_thumleft:

It amazes me how many people made counterfeits back then..

Re: A couple of KG's. One counterfeit +other relics

Most struck counterfeit KGIII coppers are made of copper, just less of it, of course there are those that were also debased with other metals, but according to research, most struck counterfeit KGIII's are basically same copper content as regals. KGII coppers had more cast counterfeits, which the counterfeiters did mix lead, zinc and other cheaper materials to help their profits. I have found numerous cast countefeit KGII Halfpence, including one cast with pewter that was falling apart. I have yet to find a counterfeit KGI, all of mine appear to be regal. William III coppers were counterfeited , a good story to read that includes them is the Philly I-95 hoard article....
