A Dire Question to Bag Depositors

I dropped of $719 worth of halves in BoA in their CoinSafe plastic bag last week.

The bag is to be shipped off and counted, and I get the amount credit to my account after it is done counting.

I purposely took off $1 to see if BoA can actually count correctly.

Today BoA gave me $718, $1 short, I am 100% positive I put in $719 because I unwrap each roll and lay into 2 even stacks before I put them into the bag. I did 72 times of this before taking $1 out of the bag.

The vault teller gave me the plastic Customer Receipt with the bag # on it when I gave him the bag. Told me I can call and dispute for error.

I don’t know what good that does and since BoA counted the halves already and who knows where the halves are right now to do a 2nd count, chances are they wont adjust the $1 for me right? Regardless I am going to call them now.

I have no experience with Bag depositing, but I can tell you now that if you dispute every dollar, you will get results.....you will be cut off.

I have a couple possible theories...

Theory 1)
Although I can't speak to what your bank does, I have heard in the past that some places just weigh the bags and calculate the contents (number of coins) based on weight.

If so, the bag may still be intact. Again just hypothesizing, but perhaps you had a number of casino halves that were worn down and weighed slightly less than the specs for a half dollar. If there were enough of them, it would be possible for a scale method to "miscount" them.

Theory 2)
Based on your description of how you verified the count up front, it is also possible that you had 1 roll that was 2 halves short such that you had 2 equal stacks of 9 for one roll. You didn't mention whether you count that the two equal stacks actually contain 10 coins each, just that there were 2 equal stacks before you put them in the bag. I have heard of numerous examples of rolls being short a couple coins on the pickup side (even from machine wrapped rolls).



Whether or not you should call and dispute the number is up to you. One option would be to call and ask what method they used to determine the count (coin counter, by weight, etc.) and then decide based on that if you want to further dispute the amount. At least in that case if nothing else you learn what method they use even if you choose not to dispute it. You could also call and inform them that you suspect their count is off but because it's only a dollar, you won't make them go through the extra paperwork this time. However, you will watch for similar issues in the future and if it continues to happen that you will plan to dispute the offages in the future. In other words you give them a warning with a chance to make sure their methods are correct to avoid annoying extra work of minor offages.

It would also depend on if this is a one time thing or something that happens frequently.

I remember going in to get a correction on a check that was cashed for $0.25 cents too much once when I was a bit younger. It wasn't that I was wrong as it was clearly cashed for the wrong amount, but the banker I was talking to showed me all the extra paperwork necessary (at least for that bank) for me to recover my quarter and was kind of begging me not to pursue it. I can't remember if I had them still do it or not, but I can only imagine that the amount of paperwork associated with this type of offage might be the same.

Since my area doesnt have any coin counters my only option is the bag deposits.
Every time i deposit i always make sure to make them deposit the money first then dispute with me after.
There might have been one or two times where i forgot to replace a .50 cent but it never got deducted from my account.
I did let them count the bag and deposit it accordingly once, NEVER AGAIN

A dire question? For a Buck? You really do hate the convenience of bagging your dumps, don't you? Perhaps, you would be more comfortable with re-rolling your halves?

Thanks for the replies, GMan specially, you provided what I was looking for.

I called customer service and was told that the coins are sent off to *shocker* a armor truck service and they are counted 3 times before posting the credit into my account.

Which armor service BoA wont say.

I told the rep that I am appreciative of the service offered to me and I just want BoA to know the armor service machine is off. Rep put memo into my account read back to me. Done

I'd rather lose $1 to use the bags than anything else

Dont worry about it man. I routinely throw in a few clads to make up for short boxes. Its the cost of doing business.

I use BofA bags for a lot of my dumps too - its a great service. Sometimes those stacks arent exactly the same height because newer/older halves vary a bit in thickness. Either way - ITS ONE DOLLAR. BofA will make you THOUSANDS of dollars in silver if you dont mess it up. Rather than fuss about the dollar, I would bring them some chocolate TODAY and keep them happy so you can keep rollin!

Heck, I'd gladly pay $1 a bag for the service. I could seriously up my volume.
