If I had had no bad luck I wouldn't have had any luck. I did have a fate worst then death for a water hunter. How about opening your case to go hunting and find out your cable craked and split? Mine did. cable.JPG Found some black tap and held my breath. I managed to hunt with no falsing I have no idea. This happened two more times and a lot of tap. I was the first one at this beach, for at least an hour. B1.JPG Then the whole world from the ship showed up. Took a shot of local life also. Black Angle fish. B3.JPG All I did was find junk on the first two beaches. This was my last one. B7.JPG I was very lucky. Ended up with a 18k lady's ring, a 14K man's ring with DAD on it and one silver. Now I have to deal with Minelab. AAHHHHH! Keeping my fingers crossed.

How did the cable get split? Was it pinched by something? You did well in the end on the rings. I am surprised the black tape worked so well, but we have all done a "McGiver" field fix at one time or another (which sometimes worked OK and sometimes was a fail).

Sorry about that cable problem, Sonny :icon_scratch:, but a huge congratulations on terrific detecting !:hello2:

Those rings are beautiful! and I like that little ? dolphin silver.:icon_thumright:

Like the gold and silver Sonny...hope your experience with Minelab is a good one. I hear they are getting better with the customer service. :icon_thumleft:

nice finds... are these pics of florida?

Very Nice!! Congratulations!! :)

Congrads on the gold, Very Nice treasure..

...Has your machine been setting for a month or so....I have seen that happen many times with the excaliburs

Glad you were able to make do and you were rewarded with those nice rings. HH.

No ARRC! These were in the Western Caribbean on a cruise.

My first Excal lasted fifteen years and went through hell and I never had this problem. Internal maybe, but, not the cable. The new one's are made up with different material that dry out and split faster

I agree with obn ,it seems once they start cracking like that it continues, but in different thread discussing maintenance of unit OBN mentioned the use of silicon spray in maintaining items that are subjected to the harsh salt water environment, added new life to a wetsuit I used . The wetsuit is much more supple and I'm hoping the same will apply to my wires on my detectors.

So that is the ugly long story huh? In spite of the problems, I think you still did good. Good luck with the repair, easiest way may be to just get another coil and wire it up yourself or ask a friend that is just sitting around not hunting near as much right now to give you a hand if you are unsure of doing it......

Glad it held up for the length of your trip...you did great...congrats on the gold.

Sexton..
Always have a spare.

I think a better Idea would bring me (OBN) along so I can repair it for you...

Nice finds Sonny! Beautiful pics

Love the pic's Sonny, great shots! Topped off with super finds!

Had it happen on one that was NEW used a couple of times and put up. MOST seem to crack near the coil. What ive noticed is the lower you tape off the cable near the lower shaft the less the cable vibrates in the water. That vibration not only will crack a cable but can affect it being picked up by your machine. Its like taking the wire and bending it everyday very fast..... something has to give if the cable is stiff. Sunny..... i replaced mine with a used Sov coil i got fairly cheap. Some of the old blue models had a period of coil defect. Taping doesnt help salt water WILL enter the cable and finally into the coil. Once they split you have to cut that cable in a circle at both ends of the break or you tape it and it splits again. Been there got that tee shirt.

Always have a spare.
I always have a spare detector and scoop. Probably not easy to take that much equipment on a cruise though.
