These are some I've taken on a trip to Yerington Nevada. There's Elk Mountain along I80 in Wyoming. A strange place called Thunder Mountain Monument in Imlay, Nevada. The Carson river in Nevada, which is rising high from the melting snow of the Sierra Mountains. Sand Mountain and an old Pony Express Station. Some kind of desert bird and a couple of wild horses I saw. This week has been a whole lot of driving, but the normally dry country is getting it's precipitation this time of the year and along with the snow melt things can be very pretty in a normally bleak and harsh dry landscape.

Great pics, Grant! That bird is a shrike. Predatory little buggers. Had one kill a Junco in my yard a couple of years ago.

Interesting. Haven't seen anything bird like it around where I live.

I've only seen a few, myself. They're apparently kinda rare. They have the habit of impaling their victims on barbed wire, or thorns, and letting them decompose before eaten. I'm not sure which subspecies that is. The one in my yard was a Northern Shrike, but the one you saw has a bit different coloring.

Well this one with it's lightning bolt eyebrows you might say is kind of a devil bird. I know if that one horse on the left was mine I might name it hippie with that hairdo it's sporting. I don't think it knew it was somewhat goofy looking. The one on the left looks very similar to a herd of wild horses in northern New Mexico I used to see all the time when I had a mine in Questa I went to before it closed. That was sad as I delt with that place for around 20 years and built a good relation with a few amigos down there. Heck I stayed many nights in Taos and could have been out looking for that Forest Fenn treasure when I finished up there.

Here's a video from 1983 that tells about Thunder Mountain Monument. Long, but very interesting!

The great basin was a much different place 20 thousand years ago when things were cooler and the place had massive lakes everywhere. Some of the oldest rock art in the US is found in the region of where these lakes once were. It be so neat to go back and see what that all looked like back then and how the inhabitants of that area lived.

I've spent many a night in Winnemucca. Once there was a mine I'd go to called the Rosebud I think it was. It was close to the Black Rock Desert. That's were they have that Burning Man event. It's strange land out there and it may have been that way for many generations...
