I dug a nice gold band yesterday and a little searching revealed I'm not the only one to dig such a hallmarked ring. I saw some others were posted on treasurenet over the years. I believe the XXX signifies 18K and the sideways W is for the maker, J.R. Woods & Sons of Brooklyn, NY. I dug a few indian heads over the weekend including 2 nice 1897's and a crusty 1881. The 1947 Roosie came from a park that rarely gives up any silver these days. A pulltab in the hole was probably the only reason it was still in the ground !

Love the JR Woods ring. I agree that it looks quite old. A quick search online showed that the company was founded in 1850. You could have a really old gold ring there--congrats.
