I've been eyeing a parcel of land for some time now and was finally able to track down the owner. Very nice guy and quick to give permission...even detailing where he suspects there is a cellar hole. As we were chatting he asked if I could help him find three survey markers in the field...of course I was quick to offer whatever help I could. We found the first two within five minutes but the third was elusive. We searched for about 20 minutes before he said that he didn't want to waste anymore of my time. I assured him I would check the area and if I found it would mark it for him. He left and I started my own detecting. I did a quick scan of the field and marked a couple areas of interest and then went back to searching for the marker...10 minutes of gridding and I had it! It had been knocked flat so once I got over it I knew it was the marker. The land owner has thousands of acres of fields in prime detecting territory so I was only too happy to help. He even told me that if I found a pot of gold he would only want 10 percent...and he was serious! Helluva guy!
This particular field was a bit of a bust but did make an interesting trio of finds. 18th century French musketball, 19th century Snider Enfield bullet and 20th century 50 cal. shell case. Very odd to find a 50 cal shell in this area...very strange.
We've now got a lot of options heading into the fall so it should be a great season!
