After Okie suggested I head back to those woods I got to thinking about it [mosquitoes-underbrush] and the temtation got the better of me. I slathered on the bug spray and headed for an area by the river that was flooded when we had the big rains.
I hunted about an hour and then found 2 weaties. The bug spray had quit working due to me sweating it off [90 degrees] but I stuck it out for two more hours and found a 1943 Merc, 2 more wheats, this padlock and a Watsons Stabilator tag. I googled Watson Stabilators and found they were shock absorbers for cars in the 1920s.
The wheats are dated 1916, 1917, 1918, and 1919.
What are the odds of that ever happening?
I think the mosquitoes got about a half cup of blood but I guess it was worth it. Fun to find some decent targets again.
Best Luck, Merf

Merf is on a roll. Very cool finds. Am I seeing the date on that lock right, 1880's?
Some great old sequential wheats too. ;D

Congrats,

Thanks MM----I think the date is 1886. I googled the company and they were founded in 1882 and merged with another co. and changed the name in 1906 if I read it right.
Might be a 100 year old lock---Too bad I didn't find the key.

Oh yeah, looks worthwhile to me. ;D Of coarse it wasn't my blood.... ;) :D Sometimes you can fight the beast off and sometimes not. Doesn't make it fun but a man's gotta do what he's gotta do. ;D ;D

Nice lock and token! Of course the Merc is fantastic.

It gets to the point sometimes you need to just hunt anyway, no matter how bad the conditions.

Great job!

The mosquitoes have been crazy after all of the rain we had. I've been in spots where 30% DEET won't even stop them this year. WTG on the cool digs.

Thanks Gibb---That is for sure, The last target I dug they were swarming me, I had to get out of there---Hope I dont get the west nile thing.

Nice digs, Merf-love the shock absorber tag-what type of area are you hunting? The mosquitoes have been unbearable out here since the rains..worse that I can remember. I can't wait till the first frost!
