Found this interesting publication about the early California gold era that includes mining techniques, equipment, pictures, etc. I think it was first published in 1994 or 95 as the last citation was dated 1994. https://www.scahome.org/publications/proceedings/Proceedings.13Lindstrom.pdf It may help some of you better understand what you are encountering in the field.
